Studland

Studland Beach & Nature Reserve

Studland Beach managed by the National Trust and is a glorious slice of natural coastline in Purbeck featuring a four-mile stretch of golden, sandy beach, with gently shelving bathing waters and views of Old Harry Rocks and the Isle of Wight.

Ideal for water sports and includes the most popular naturist beach in Britain (parents please note!). The heathland behind the beach is a haven for native wildlife and features all six British reptiles. There are designated trails through the sand dunes and woodlands, to explore and look for deer, insects and bird life as well as a wealth of wild flowers. For further information: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/studland-beach/

Brownsea Island

Famous for red squirrels and the formation of the Scouting movement by Lord Baden Powell, Brownsea Island is dramatically located in Poole Harbour, with spectacular views across to the Purbeck Hills.

Thriving natural habitats - including woodland, heathland, and a lagoon - create a unique haven for wildlife, such as the rare red squirrel and a wide variety of birds, including dunlin, kingfishers, common and sandwich terns and oystercatchers. The Baden-Powell Outdoor Centre invites you to follow in the footsteps of Lord Baden-Powell and the very first Scouts who camped here in 1907. Groups of Scouts and Guides can camp here during the summer. So whether you love wildlife or just want to escape from the stresses of modern life with your family, Brownsea is the perfect place to explore and enjoy throughout the year.

Managed again by the National Trust & also Dorset Wildlife Trust. You need to take a boat to get to the island, either a ferry from the pier at Swanage (in summer only), or take the car to Shell Bay (past Studland) and the car ferry across to the other side. Boats to the island leave regularly from here from the end of March to end of October.
